Vision Health

Healthy Eyes, Happy You

Yearly eye examinations are recommended because many health problems show signs and symptoms in our eyes first. Early detection and treatment of conditions helps prevent any further health or vision complications.

Conditions that affect eyesight

  • Glaucoma is a disease that affects our peripheral sight first and causes blinding if left untreated. Eye drops and surgeries help prevent sight loss if diagnosed in time.
  • Diabetes can have sight-threatening complications if left uncontrolled. Annual exams are necessary to watch for these complications.
  • Macular Degeneration is a disease that affects our central vision and is now more than ever treatable if diagnosed in time.
  • Cataracts usually occur with aging and cause cloudiness of the lens inside the eye.  Yearly exams allow for early detection and monitoring.

Common health problems with ocular signs and symptoms

An eye exam allows the optometrist to help your physician detect different health problems, including:

  • High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Stroke,
  • High Cholesterol, Diabetes
  • Thyroid conditions, Myasthenia Gravis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Arthritis

Being aware of symptoms and signs helps detection

It’s important to alert your optometrist of any of eye-related symptoms. Schedule an exam if you are experiencing:

  • Flashes of Light and Floaters
  • Headaches and Dizziness
  • Double Vision
  • Eye pain
  • Redness or Irritation
  • Blurred Vision
